MUSIC AND CINEMA ON THE LAKE

Two international festivals top the list of summer events: Stresa and Locarno

Not only is there the magic of the green and the charm of the water. Not only is there the outline of the mountains and the gardens. Not only is there peace and calm, art locales and princely villas. Lago Maggiore offers its guests a rich array of emotions that unravel throughout the summer including sights and sounds of notable mastery.

In particular, there are two festivals known throughout the world: the Stresa Festival, with its music weeks held in fantastic areas around the lake and the Locarno Film Festival, the most innovative cinematic showing in Europe.
The 53rd Stresa Festival opened up with the third edition of Midsummer Jazz Concerts, a mini show on the lake’s shore which showcased internationally renowned names in music such as Stefano Bollani, Brazilian mandolinist Hamilton de Hollanda, guitarist Al Di Meola and Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba.
From 19 August the music changes style and location arriving at the magnificent Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso at Leggiuno. And certainly not to miss, finish off the series with two evenings of Bach’s Cello Suites played by Enrico Dindo.
The Festival’s main event will take place from 22 August to 6 September and has been titled Musica in movimento. The number is 1000 and the history of Stresa Music Weeks has been evolving for over half a century. The opening concert of the season has been entrusted to the Orchestra e Coro del Teatro Regio di Torino, directed by Gianandrea Noseda, that will offer a selection of acts from Rossini’s Guglielmo Tell. Sunday 31 August Christoph Eschenbach will direct Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester in Les offrandes oubliées by Messiaen and in Symphony n. 5 by Čajkovskij. On Tuesday 2 September the Stresa Festival Orchestra returns to Congress Hall directed by Gianandrea Noseda performing Stravinskij’s Concerto in re per archi and Beethoven’s Symphony no. 8. Headliner of the Festival’s closing concert, the London Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Vladimir Jurowski will be performing Brahms’ Symphony no. 4 on Saturday 6 September.
Not to mention the special projects underway that complement the Festival, one of which features Elio, founder and leader of the group Elio e le Storie Tese, and the quintet I Fiati Associati, featured guests on Monday 1 September at Loggia del Cashmere on the Island of Isola Madre, performing Il ‘900, the music of Kurt Weill.
The 67th edition of the Locarno Film Festival will take place from 6 to 16 August. As always, the programme is full of various productions and will present an updated look at the world of contemporary film. Piazza Grande serves as the heart of the Festival. Its screen is one of the biggest in Europe and is equipped with extraordinary technical capabilities, making this unique place one of the most beautiful outdoor cinemas in the world. There are many films lined up as well as exceptional guests such as Juliette Binoche and Mia Farrow, Armin Mueller-Stahl and Melanie Griffith, Jonathan Pryce and Jason Schwartzman. This year on Sunday 10 August, the prestigious Pardo d’onore will be presented to the French director Agnès Varda making an appearance to receive the award, after which there will be an open conversation with the public.
The true star of the festival is none other than Roman Polanski, one of the most influential figures in the history of cinema, who, together with actress Emmanuelle Seigner, will introduce the showing of his latest film Venus in Fur on Thursday 14 August in Piazza Grande and will also hold a talk on cinema open to the public on Friday 15 August at 04:15pm at La Sala. This is an event not to be missed.
